Biography

Lauren Cadel is a PhD candidate in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto. Her research focuses on co-developing, refining, and evaluating a toolkit that aims to improve medication self-management among adults with spinal cord injury/dysfunction in Canada. Prior to starting her PhD, Lauren completed her Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Toronto in 2019. Lauren is also a Research Associate at the Institute for Better Health at Trillium Health Partners.

Biography

Enxhi Qama is a researcher specializing in health sciences, chronic condition self-management, and patient education. She is completing her PhD at Swiss Paraplegic Research and University of Lucerne. She is investigating how individuals with spinal cord injury integrate self-management into their daily lives post-rehabilitation. Her research interests lie at the intersection of patient decision-making, problem-solving strategies, and health behaviors. Enxhi's current work aims at contributing to the development of evidence-based guidelines for improving self-management. She has collaborated with rehabilitation centers and academic institutions on interdisciplinary projects and has published in peer-reviewed journals.

Biography

Åshild Gjellestad is an associate professor at the Institute of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences at VID Specialized University in Bergen, Norway. She holds a PhD in Diaconia, Values and Professional practice and her dissertation focused on home-dwelling persons with dementia, resistance and the use of involuntary treatment and care. She also does research related to spinal cord injury and the experiences of couples dealing with SCI. Silje Mæland is a distinguished professor at the Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Bergen, Norway. She specializes in research within the fields of work and health, focusing on topics such as sickness absence, work ability, and return to work. Mæland also leads the National Professional Council for Work and Health and the Professional Forum in the Alrek health cluster. In addition to her academic role, Silje Mæland serves as the head of research at Sunnaasstiftelsen. Her research encompasses a broad range of health complaints and functional challenges in patient populations, Mæland's recent research has focused specifically on women's health, particularly the impact of menopause on work capacity and quality of life. Her contributions to the field are marked by a commitment to improving health outcomes and understanding the complex interplay between health and work. Sanne Angel is an Associate Professor at the Department of Public Health, specifically within the Department of Science in Nursing at Aarhus University. She holds a PhD in Nursing Science, with her dissertation focusing on the process towards a meaningful life after a traumatic spinal cord injury. Her research areas include recovery during rehabilitation from the patients’ and relatives’ perspective, patient participation, vulnerability and sex-life. Angel has contributed significantly to the field through various projects and publications. Her work employs primarily qualitative methods with a hermeneutical phenomenology approach.

Biography

Dra. Lluïsa Montesinos-Magraner is clinical head of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and the Rehabilitation Research Group coordinator at VHIR. She graduated in medicine and surgery at the University Rovira y Virgili (Tarragona) and specialized in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the same University Hospital of Vall d'Hebron. She completed her doctorate at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona with the doctoral thesis entitled "Comorbidity and physical activity in people with paraplegia", with cum laude and awarded the best thesis in adapted sport at the University of Valencia. She is a collaborating professor of Medicine and physiotherapy degree at the Universitat Autónoma Barcelona and has participated as a speaker in more than 25 courses. She has also made training and collaborative stages at the center for basic research in spinal cord injury (ICORD) in Vancouver with Professor Dr. Kraussioukov, as well as at the Texas Institute of Rehabilitations and Research (TIRR) in Houston with Professor Gerard Francisco and Professor Donovan. Dr. Montesinos is the Spanish Paraplegia Society (SEP) president and has been a member of the Catalan Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (secretary). She has presented more than 80 papers at national and 25 at international congresses. She has participated in 18 multicenter clinical trials, two of which are competitive. He has won five awards for best research paper, published 26 articles, written 3 book chapters, 2 clinical practice guidelines and 4 clinical consensus protocols.

Biography

Tim Geraghty is a Rehabilitation Medicine Physician and Senior Staff Specialist in the Queensland Spinal Cord Injuries Service (QSCIS), Department of Rehabilitation, Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH), Metro South Health. He has recently commenced in the role of Director of The Hopkins Centre. This is a joint appointment between Metro South Health and Griffith University. He has almost 25 years’ clinical, management and research experience in spinal cord injury and rehabilitation medicine. Tim undertakes research across a range of areas including spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury and persistent pain and health, disability and rehabilitation services and has been a co-investigator on national and international spinal cord injury research collaborations involving sleep, physical activity and acute SCI management. He is co-author on a national position statement on exercise and SCI. His recent research focus has included examination of post-discharge rehabilitation trajectories, service access and secondary conditions and their impact on outcomes for people with ABI and SCI. He is a member of the National Steering Committee, Australian arm of the International SCI (Aus-InSCI) Community Survey project and Principal Investigator for Queensland. He has a keen interest in translation of rehabilitation and disability research into clinical practice improvement and policy reform and in research capacity building in rehabilitation medicine and rehabilitation services with the ultimate aim of improving service provision, outcomes and the lived experience of people with a disability.

Biography

Prof. Dr. Sara Rubinelli is Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at the University of Lucerne and Head of the Health Communication Research Group at Swiss Paraplegic Research. Her research focuses on health communication, patient-centered care, and the role of language and narratives in healthcare decision-making. She has contributed extensively to the fields of public health, public and institutional communication, and rehabilitation sciences, with a particular interest in the ethical and epistemological challenges of health information dissemination. Prof. Rubinelli is actively involved in international collaborations, including her role in the World Rehabilitation Alliance (WHO) and advisory contributions to research initiatives on science communication and digital health. She is Senior editors of the Journal of Health Communication and of Patient Education and Counseling. Her work bridges theoretical and applied perspectives, aiming to enhance communication strategies that empower patients, health professionals, and policymakers.

Biography

Dr. Chester Ho is a Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and the inaugural Spinal Cord Injury Research Endowed Chair at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He is also the Facility Medical Director for the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, Canada. He was trained in Cambridge University and Harvard Medical School where he was Chief Resident. Dr. Ho is a renowned clinician-researcher with an interest in the rehabilitation and healthcare delivery of persons with spinal cord injury. Dr. Ho has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers in top rehabilitation journals and has received research funding from agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, US Department of Veterans Affairs, Brain Canada and Craig H. Neilsen Foundation. He was awarded as the 2021 “Champion of Change” by the Canadian Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Association.

Annelie Schedin Leiulfsrud is an Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Science andTechnology (NTNU), Department of Neuro Medicine and Movement Science in Trondheim, Norway. She is an OTR Specialist with an PhD in Health Science from NTNU. She has worked 25 years as a clinical occupational therapist in Sweden and later in Norway with rehabilitation of people with a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Leiulfsrud´s research focus on participation in society- particularly employment after an injury, inclusion, and recognition for disabled people. Her research is both grounded in cross national comparisons based on survey methodology, and qualitative analysis of employment related issues. Leiulfsrud`s research is published in journals such as Spinal Cord, Disability and Rehabilitation, Disability and Society, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, International Journal of Public Health, Work, Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research.
