Abstract

Overview:

This instructional workshop will provide a summary of the essential aspects of systematic reviews. It should be of interest to those who read and conduct systematic reviews. The focus will be on key methodological issues related to defining the purpose of a systematic review, finding the relevant studies, and extracting and pooling data. Time will be allocated throughout the workshop for questions and discussion.

Biography

Professor Lisa Harvey (PhD) has 20 years clinical experience in spinal cord injuries. She currently holds a professorial position at Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney where she teaches, runs her own research program and supervisors PhD students. She has over 200 publications which include clinical trials and systematic reviews. Most of her research has focused on putting an evidence base to widely administered physiotherapy interventions. She is currently principal investigator on some large multi-centered clinical trials being run in Australia and Asia. She teaches widely both nationally and internationally, and is Editor-in-Chief of Spinal Cord. Co-author Marcel Dijkers: Dr Marcel Dijkers is Professor of PM&R at Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, USA. He has 160 published papers and chapters, and over 250 conference presentations. His research focuses on the social and functional consequences of spinal cord injury (SCI), the delivery of health services for individuals with SCI, as well as the determinants of community integration, quality of life and other outcomes. He also has an interest in research methodology including the measurement of functioning and quality of life, treatment integrity in rehabilitation research, the classification and quantification of rehabilitative treatments, and systematic reviewing/meta-analysis for evidence-based practice. Dr. Dijkers is a past president of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and Associate Editor of Spinal Cord.
