Ageing with Spinal Cord Injury: Unpacking the Lived Experience Using Evidence from the International SCI Community Survey (InSCI)

Biography

Professor Dr. Julia Patrick Engkasan is a senior rehabilitation physician and academic at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. She is widely recognised for her leadership in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation, and health system strengthening. Her work focuses on improving long-term outcomes and quality of life for individuals with disabilities through evidence-based practice, policy development, and international collaboration. Professor Dr. Diana Pacheco Barzallo is a researcher at Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF), Switzerland, and an active contributor to the International Spinal Cord Injury Community Survey (InSCI). Her research centres on functioning, environmental determinants, and cross-country comparisons in SCI populations. She has been involved in large-scale international studies examining ageing, participation, and health system influences on people living with SCI. Associate Professor Dr. Adrian Martinez is affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, University of Lucerne, Switzerland. His expertise lies in epidemiology, biostatistics, and the analysis of large international datasets, particularly within the InSCI framework. His work focuses on translating complex data into meaningful insights to inform clinical decision-making, rehabilitation strategies, and health policy. Associate Professor Dr. Fatimah Ahmedy is an academic and rehabilitation specialist at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia. Her work focuses on neurorehabilitation, community-based rehabilitation, and ageing with SCI in Asian contexts. She is actively involved in regional and international collaborations, contributing to research on secondary health conditions, functional outcomes, and rehabilitation service development. She is also engaged in training and capacity building among healthcare professionals in rehabilitation.
