Biography
Mr Pierre Mertens is a psychotherapist, artist, and international advocate for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. His engagement began in 1978 when his first daughter, Liesje, was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He and his wife founded the Belgian Association for Spina Bifida in 1979. He served as President of the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IF) from 1995 to 2012. He founded Child-Help in 2006, now Child-Help International. CHI works with local partners to strengthen multidisciplinary care, parent support groups, continence management programmes, and training initiatives in low-resource settings.
Dr Femke Bannink Mbazzi is a clinical and educational psychologist, and cultural anthropologist with over 25 years of research and clinical work experience with children and families with disabilities in Uganda. She heads the Disability Research Group, Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Uganda Research Unit and is an Associate professor at the International Centre for Evidence in Disability, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Dr. Raju Dhakal, MBBS, MD is the first PM&R physician of Nepal and is Medical Director and Consultant PM&R Physician (Physiatrist) at the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre, Nepal. He is Program Director – Nepal Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellowship at Patan Academy of Health Sciences, Nepal. He is an active leader in national and international policymaking, development of protocols, training manuals, and academics in spinal cord injury, disability and rehabilitation.
Dr Thomas Glott: MD, specialist in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PM&R), and Medical Director of the Department of Spinal Cord Injury at Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital, Norway. He has more than 25 years of clinical experience in the management of neurogenic bladder dysfunction, including urodynamic assessment and related research. He has contributed to international projects in Ukraine, Cambodia, Lebanon, and Syria.
Workshop Chairperson:
Mr Stephen Muldoon: Having qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1990 and gaining an MSC in Development Management in 2002, his work has concentrated on strengthening and increasing access to healthcare and rehabilitation services in low-income countries. Working with local partner organisations for the past 3 decades he has a distinguished track record in supporting the design, establishment and strengthening of comprehensive and sustainable SCI services in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Ukraine. He is a founding member of the Asian Spinal Cord Network (ASCoN) and served as Chairperson of the ISCoS Education Committee from 2017 – 2023. He played a leading role in the conceptualisation, design and development of the ISCoS educational resource www.elearnsci.org
