Lived Experience Governance in Action: Co-Creating a Scoping Review on Social Inclusion After Spinal Cord Injury

Biography

Dr Johnny Bourke is a Senior Research Fellow at the John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research at The University of Sydney and a fellow of Sydney Health Partners. Drawing on his academic work, and lived experience of spinal cord injury, Johnny specialises in co-designing implementation strategies and measuring implementation effectiveness within rehabilitation practice and policy. Johnny collaborates with national and international colleagues to understand and engage diverse perspectives across health systems. Johnny received the 2025 Laffan Prize to co-create new ways to promote increased social participation for people with spinal cord injury in NSW.

Biography

Mrs Shawna Power is a PhD candidate at Western Sydney University, Australia, and the recipient of the Spinal Cord Injuries Australia 3-year scholarship (2023–2026). Her research focuses on rebuilding meaningful and productive life roles following spinal cord injury, with an emphasis on supporting individuals to re-engage in purposeful activities and community participation.

Training the Trainers: Co-Producing an Exercise Professional Education Program for Community Spinal Cord Injury Practice

Biography

Dr Beatriz IR de Oliveira is a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, Deptartment of Allied Health, School of Health Sciences (SoHS), Swinburne University of Technology. She is a co-investigator in the 2025-2030 MRFF Maternal Health and Healthy Lifestyles project "Increasing access to physical activity for people with spinal cord injuries: The Train the Trainers model". Beatriz is also an educator in the Physiotherapy Discipline. Her teaching innovations have garnered excellence in teaching awards, including the Australian Awards for University Teaching 2022, reflecting her commitment to enriching student experiences. In research, her expertise in physical activity and qualitative research has led to collaborations in diverse fields of health and education.

Expected outcomes and influencing factors after reconstructive hand surgery in tetraplegia

Biography

Therese Ramström is an occupational therapist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and a researcher at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. She has worked in spinal cord injury rehabilitation for over 20 years, specializing in upper limb rehabilitation for individuals with tetraplegia. In 2022, Therese earned her PhD with the dissertation, Rehabilitation and outcomes after spasticity-correcting surgery in the upper limb. Her ongoing research focuses on assessing reconstructive hand surgery including spasticity-correcting surgery, with a particular emphasis on patients' experiences and the treatment’s impact on their daily lives.
