Performance Optimization of the Athlete with Spinal Cord Injury

Biography

Daniel Theisen holds a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) where he took on a position of assistant professor as of 2000. In 2007 he joined the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) to develop new research activities into sports medicine and rehabilitation science. In 2009 he incepted the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory (LIH) which he di-rected until 2018, developing expertise in epidemiology and biomechanics of sports injury prevention. Since 2019 he has been the director of ALAN – Maladies Rares Luxembourg, a non-profit organisation for patients living with a rare disease. Dr Theisen has had several academic appointments in Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland and Chile, providing teaching for graduate and postgraduate students in different areas related to exercise science.

The Aging Athlete with Spinal Cord Injury

Biography

Emiliana Bizzarini is chief physician of the Spinal Unit in the Rehabilitation Department, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Institute (IMFR) in Udine-Italy. Physical Medicine Rehabilitation and Sport Medicine physician, she has 25 years of experience in spinal cord injury clinical care and research. She has expertise in paralympic sport and classification. Chief Medical Doctor for the Italian Paralympic Committee at the Para-lympic Games in PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2021, Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024. International Classifier for the International Wheelchair Bas-ketball Federation (IWBF) and member of the panel for the eligibility assessment. Her main research applications focus on exercise prescrip-tion and cardiovascular fitness in persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI), effects of lumbar transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) on gait and spasticity in SCI persons, gait robot-assisted rehabilitation in SCI persons. Since 2007 she collaborates for the clinical aspect with SPINAL Lab SISSA-IMFR Udine to develop researches about the neuro-modulation of the neuronal circuits of the spinal cord.
