International Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Cycling Clinical Practice Guidelines: Development and Planning for Implementation

Biography

Dr. Ho is an SCI Physiatrist with a special interst on the healthcare delivery and management of complications following SCI. He is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to study the transitions in care for persons with SCI from inpatient rehabilitation hospital to the community, and by the Craig H Neilsen Foundation and Praxis Spinal Cord Institute to study the effects of early functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling after SCI. Dr. Bersch is a Physiotherapist with expertise in the utilization and implementation of FES in SCI and peripheral nerve lesions. As the leader of the International FES Centre in the Swiss Paraplegic Centre, she integrates clinical treatment with research, supporting clinicians, therapists, engineers, scientists and end-users. Prof Gorgey is the Director of SCI Research at Hunter Holmes McGuire at VA Medical Center and Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Virginia Commonwealth University. He studies the effects of electrical stimulation, exercise and testosterone replacement therapy on parameters of physical activity in persons including body composition, metabolic profile and mitochondrial health. Recently, he was funded to study the applications of exoskeleton with and without neuromodulation techniques on motor recovery. Prof.Dr. Janssen is a full professor of Rehabilitation Research at the Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and senior researcher at Reade, Center for Rehabilitation and Rheumatology in Amsterdam. His primary areas of research include physical exercise of wheelchair users with spinal cord injuries, electrical stimulation of paralyzed muscles, recovery of walking ability, and adaptive sports. Dr Noonan is the Director of Research & Best Practice Implementation at Praxis Spinal Cord Institute in Canada. She is responsible for leading translational research and best practice implementation projects at Praxis, which has been supporting the research and national implementation of activity-based therapy across Canada.
