Building a Person-Centred Model of Spinal Cord Injury Healthcare in Canada

Biography

Dr. Ho is an SCI Physiatrist with a special interest on the healthcare delivery and management of complications following SCI. He integrates his clinical and research interests with his healthcare leadership position in Alberta. He is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to study transitions in care for persons with SCI from inpatient rehabilitation hospital to the community. Dr. Cowley is an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba. She is a motor systems electrophysiologist and holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Spinal Cord Function and Health after SCI. Her research includes investigating neural mechanisms and pathways generating and coordinating locomotion, exercise after SCI, and SCI-related health policy. Dr. Cowley spearheaded development and implementation of the Human SCI Research Centre for Health, Balance and Motor Control laboratory at the University of Manitoba. Dr Noonan is the Director of Research & Best Practice Implementation at Praxis Spinal Cord Institute. She is responsible for leading translational research and best practice implementation projects at Praxis, which has been collaborating with the Health Standards Organization in the development of new SCI health standards for Canada. John Chernesky is the Manger of the Praxis Spinal Cord Institute's PLEX Program. With over 30 years of lived experience of SCI since being paralyzed, John has participated in dozens of research studies and is co-investigator on a number of research projects. He works closely with the SCI PLEX community to ensure research is addressing their priorities. Mr. Athanasopoulos has devoted his life to building relationships and knowledge benefiting people living with SCI and other disabilities for the past 24 years. He has published in academic journals on Public Policy, Government Relations, and Knowledge Translation. He co-chaired the technical committee with The Health Standards Organization to develop accreditation standards for SCI Rehabilitation across Canada,
